If You Think It Doesn't Matter
Who Does Your Taxes,
THINK AGAIN!
A Very Brief History of the IRS
The 10 biggest tax blunders
Court Ruling
It all started back in 1862, when President Lincoln and Congress created an income tax to fund the Civil War. The tax was repealed in 1872 . . . revived in 1894 . . . and ruled unconstitutional by the Supreme Court in 1895. In 1913, the 16th Amendment gave Congress the authority to, once again, enact an income tax. Wasting no time, it levied a 1% tax on net personal incomes above $3,000 with a 6% surtax on incomes of more than $500,000. Since then, the rate has gone up (e.g., to finance the World War I effort) and down (e.g., in the post-war years) several times -- but the tax itself is here to stay.
Keep an eye out for common errors.
For something that's required of most American citizens once a year, you'd think the feds would make tax returns a tad more user-friendly.
On average, a basic 1040 form takes some 10 hours to complete -- more if you're planning to itemize. And if you're looking for help in the IRS instruction guide, be prepared to wade through 126 pages of fine print. Is it any wonder that mistakes are common?

The court reminded her that she is free to call the payments whatever she liked but if they are made in exchange for services, they are taxable.
